The Indo-American Society of Interventional Cardiology (ISIC) was founded in 2002 by a group of Interventional Cardiologists of Indian origin practicing in the United States.
Interventional Cardiology is an established specialty of Cardiology that focuses on the treatment of coronary artery disease by the application of novel techniques that perform non-invasive treatment for this very common and deadly ailment. There are a very large number of Indian Interventional Cardiologists who obtained their basic medical training in India and who practice Interventional Cardiology in the United States. These physicians, numbering more than one thousand, are bound by cultural, scientific and spiritual bonds. Between its members, this very large group of highly-skilled physicians performs a significant proportion of Interventional Cardiology procedures in the United States of America. ISIC physicians include academicians, researchers, and recognized thought-leaders in the specialty of Interventional Cardiology. They conduct research at premier Cardiology Institutions in the country and are responsible for an overwhelming amount of scientific publications in Basic Sciences, Clinical and Interventional Cardiology. The organization is unique and it brings together a large group of physicians committed to providing educational, research and training benefits for its members and for the Indian community.
ISIC is a unique organization in so far as its structure and role are concerned. Although there does exist a society of Cardiologists of Indian Origin in America, there is no similar organization composed of physicians from India who practice Interventional Cardiology in the U.S.
ISIC has now existed for about three years. Its broad structure consists of elected officials that comprise of a President and 4 Divisional Presidents, serving the Eastern, Southern, Mid-western and Western Divisions of the country. In addition, there are representative Program Chairpersons.

ISIC is an organization with a single goal of uniting Indian interventional cardiologists in USA to promote education, research, networking, charity, development and industry liaison. Opportunities are enormous in the field of interventional cardiology and as a group, ISIC can do what AMA does for the US physicians.

ISIC is a young organization that is already off to a dynamic start. Goals of ISIC include providing educational opportunities to its members as well as service to the community. Educational symposia at major interventional meetings have been held at least 2 times per year for the past 3 years. These symposia have featured prominent speakers in the world of cardiology, as well as distinguished guests, such as the Indian Ambassador to the United States. With respect to charitable activities, a program to provide free stents to indigent patients in India has been successfully running for the past 2 years and has benefited many people. Goals for the future include further educational offerings, such as the ability of Indian American interventionalists to obtain training in transseptal techniques in India and for Indian cardiologists to obtain exposure to American practices. As membership grows, ISIC will expand the potential opportunities for members and the patients they serve.

The idea of ISIC has matured into a meaningful organization that has well-differentiated goals, a clear vision and enormous possibilities. The combined talent of the Indian Interventional Cardiologists can become a loud presence in the global practice of our specialty. I am particularly delighted about the possibilities to help our colleagues in India as well as donate stents and other equipment for the poor patients. It has been a proud privilege to lead this remarkable organization. |
