| Stents for the Underprivileged |
The Stents for the Underprivileged is an innovative program that highlights the true philanthropic potential and spirit of ISIC.
Begun in 2003, the program donates coronary stents to a designated cardiac catheterization laboratory in India. The recipient hospital is selected from a list of recommended hospitals by the ISIC Executive Committee. Requirements to obtain this grant include a busy invasive cardiology program at the recipient hospital and one that serves a large number of poor people. ISIC procures these stents from the various U.S. stent manufacturers that donate these stents for ISIC -designated programs. The use of these stents is mandated for the underprivileged and their use pattern is strictly monitored by ISIC.
For 2004 and 2005, the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Kochi, Kerala, India, was the recipient of this ISIC grant. Physicians at AIMS have appropriately managed this grant and have performed an outstanding job in documenting the use of these stents for the underprivileged.
ISIC wishes to salute Dr. Haridas from AIMS for assuring the success of this program and for personally performing several of these procedures for the underprivileged.
Applications are now being accepted for 2006 from prospective hospitals in India that would like to be considered for this grant. Applications should be sent to:
