The Indian Society of Interventional Cardiology (ISIC) was formally launched on Wednesday, September 25, 2002, during the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference held here this week. ISIC has been formed to unite several thousand Interventional Cardiologists of Indian origin in a group "committed to providing educational, research, and training opportunities to its members."
ISIC has been organized into five United States geographic divisions: Atlantic North East, Atlantic South East, Mid-West, South West and West Divisions. The initial elected members of ISIC include as President, Dr. Sameer Mehta and as Division Presidents: Dr. Samin Sharma, Dr. Raj R. Makkar, Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt, Dr. Raja Naidu, and Dr. Rakesh Sharma.
The First General Body meeting of ISIC is scheduled in Miami between February 6-8, 2003.
Speaking during the inauguration meeting, held at the Bombay Club, Washington D.C., Dr. Mehta said, "I am honored to lead this elite group that includes notable physicians who have made tremendous contributions to the field of Interventional Cardiology. I want to take this opportunity to welcome all Interventional Cardiologists of Indian origin to ISIC. Let us make ISIC an organization we can be proud of."
Division President Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt from the Cleveland Clinic remarked, "I hope that ISIC will address the unmet need of conducting research into the epidemic of premature coronary artery disease in patients from the Indian subcontinent." Dr. Raj R. Makkar, from Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles described his motivation for joining ISIC as an "opportunity to harness our individual intellectual talents towards improving patient care and providing ISIC members with opportunities to conduct meaningful research."
The group estimates that there are over 2,000 interventional cardiologists of Indian origin who are currently in practice in the United States.
